Don't Miss This!

October 31, 2008 - November 2, 2008

HSM is merging with MSX (middle school ministry) for the 2008 Fall Retreat. We will be hanging out at First Irving in costume for Fall-A-Palooza. After some friendly Halloween competition we will head to Lake View Retreat Center in Waxahachie for the rest of the weekend. You will have a blast as we hang out and play some crazy rec games. We will have a time to Worship and study the Bible. The experience you have with God this weekend will be super relevant to you as a student living in North Texas in the Fall of 2008!

If you haven't signed up yet you can do so now by emailing pmurrell@fbcirving.org or calling 972.253.1171 and asking for Jared or Peter. Just give us your name, phone #, mailing address, email address and let us know your plans for payment and you will be signed up. We will send you more info in the mail so you will know what to do next. The cost is $55.00 and is due as soon as possible! Keep in mind that we only have 50 spots available and the first 50 to pay will be the 50 that go.

And one more thing...if you have a school related conflict (game, performance, etc.) don't let that keep you from experiencing this weekend. Let us know your conflict and we can work with you on your specific situation to make sure you don't miss out!

Worth Watching...Worth Discussing

The HSM has been watching a video by The Voice of the Martyrs about 8 teens who took a trip to Vietnam. If you haven't seen their story we highly recommend it. It's like a reality T.V. show that you might see on MTV but with an eternal purpose. We have learned a lot and have had some good discussion after watching each chapter. We will continue watching and discussing the video for two more weeks. You don't want to miss this!

Because this is a blog you can post your comments. Take a few moments to write out some of your thoughts about the video or something that stuck with you from our discussion. We would love to hear what God is telling you!

Now Is the Time to Worship!

The High School Ministry is committed to following God’s leading and we have proven this over the last few months. We are not afraid to follow Him even if He leads us outside of our “comfortable box”. God led us to ditch the “traditional Wednesday night youth deal” and stretched us to new levels. We launched Mad House, something that none of us had ever really seen before. This was a challenge for all of us, especially your High School Pastor who has been apart of Wed night youth services for the last 16 years (wow, I’m really dating myself here). God has blessed our obedience and we have seen a lot of new and returning faces! Most Wednesday nights our attendance has been double and even triple a few times! Praise God! After saying all of that, I would like to tell you that God is leading the HSM to re-introduce a time of worship on some select Wednesday nights. We will continue to do Mad House on a regular basis but will interrupt Mad House from time to time for a Wednesday night worship series.
This is where I would like some feedback from you. Over the next few days I would like you to spend some time in prayer. After you have prayed, please post your comments. Think on this: what are some creative ways that we can worship our God? What could we include in these worship services that would allow a student to express themselves to Him? Think about the student who has been in church for 18 years and also the student who has been in church for 18 minutes.

SBF (Student Bible Fellowship)

Student Bible Fellowship or SBF is our Sunday morning Bible study that we look forward to each week. Students studying the Bible and enjoying a time of fellowship are the two things we are focused on. Breakfast is served each week at 9:30a in the High School room. This helps us promote an atmosphere for hanging out and gets us ready for Bible study.

This week Melissa prepared french toast for us! Thanks Mel!

There are several ways to tell if the students enjoy breakfast. One is a look of satisfaction...

Another way to tell if they are enjoying breakfast is if they are shoveling it in...

and of course you can check out their plates after they eat.

good times and good toast!!

What is Love?

This time of year we hear a lot of talk about love. We see hearts, candy, flowers, and chocolate all over the place. My sons will be exchanging tiny pictures of cartoon characters tomorrow with their friends to say Happy Valentines Day. This is all in good fun but it has made me think. Does our culture understand what love is? Have the times skewed our understanding of love? Check out what the Bible has to say about love then post your thoughts! You can click on the link "Bible Study Tools" in our list of friends. Do a search for "Love" and let us know what you come up with!

Tour 2008

February 8-10, 2008 was a big weekend for HSM! We were at a conference hosted by Student Life called Tour ’08. It was a great weekend of gathering for worship and growing in our understanding of who God is and who we are as followers of Jesus Christ! Thanks so much for all who helped put this weekend together! Check out some of the pictures below.

Our group of 23 joined thousands of students from all over North Texas and beyond...

The event was held at the Garland Special Events Center...

Gregg Matte was our Speaker on Friday evening. His teaching spured some good discussion in our small group time later that night.

Ben Stuart was the speaker for our sessions on Saturday. He shared some good truths and was stinkin hilarious. He really made us think and laugh!

Worship was led by Spur58! They were great lead worshipers!

After the sessions we hung out in homes in Irving were we had some great small group discussion...

We also got our eat on at the host homes!
